2008 Recruit School
The first 10-weeks of this program will present comprehensive training in all aspects of basic firefighting skills. This course is designed to prepare and train recruits to meet hiring skills established by fire departments as entry-level firefighters. Knowledge obtained from classroom instruction is transferred to fire-ground application during 100 hours of live fire training. This course meets all requirements for Firefighter 1 certification through the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) process. Departments desiring to attain the advanced level of Fire Fighter II for their personnel can opt for an additional two weeks of training immediately following the basic Recruit Academy. The 12-week course will meet all the requirements for Firefighter 1 and Firefighter 2 certification through the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) process. Those individuals not selecting to complete the final two weeks may not attend the final two weeks at a later date but will be required to attend the regularly scheduled 40-hour Firefighter 2 course. Recruits must pass the IFSAC Firefighter I and/or Firefighter 2 written and practical examinations to receive a certificate of graduation for the classes. These courses are accredited through the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) process and recruits receive a certificate from the Fire Training Academy upon successful demonstration of skills through an evaluation process. A copy of the International Fire Service Training Association (FSTA) Essential of Firefighting manual and workbook is provided for the recruits to assist them in this course of study. This is a demanding hands-on course that equips the recruit with the skills necessary to meet the challenges of being a firefighter.
This 180-hour resident program is designed for volunteer firefighters and attendees of a Fire Science college program who require training to the NFPA Fire Fighter 1 level. Firefighters will receive basic training in fire control, search and rescue, ladders, loss control, self-contained breathing apparatus, fire ground safety, tools, equipment and hazardous materials awareness. Successful completion of this course will result in IFSAC certification. Housing and meal services are available in an academy like setting over the weekends for the firefighters.
