District Eight is situated along Washington State’s Pacific coastline with the Canadian border to the north, just across the Strait of Juan de Fuca. To the south, across the Columbia River, is the state of Oregon. To the east lies Puget Sound with the Hood Canal running into the heart of the district.

Captain Steve Sutton is commander of District Eight, headquartered in Bremerton. The district is responsible for providing services to Clallam, Grays Harbor, Jefferson, Kitsap, Mason, Pacific, and Wahkiakum counties. Detachment offices are located in Hoquiam, Port Angeles, Poulsbo, Naselle, and Shelton.

Approximately 130 WSP employees work in District Eight, providing an array of services—law enforcement troopers, commercial vehicle enforcement officers, vehicle inspectors, communications staff (911), criminal investigation detectives, and support personnel.

A wide variety of places fill District Eight. The Washington State Patrol Training Academy is located near the town of Shelton. Troopers of District Eight partner with the State Patrol’s Department of Homeland Security to assist with security measures to the nations largest ferry service, and many of Washington State Ferry Terminals are also located within the district.

With our miles of coastline, District Eight troopers stand ready to assist local governments in the case of a Tsunami striking the Washington coast.

Also located within the district are many tourist attractions, from the Olympic National Park to ocean beaches, rainforests, glacier-capped peaks and a stunning variety of plants and animals. Roads provide access to the outer edges of the park, but the heart of Olympic National Park is wilderness; a primeval sanctuary for humans and wild creatures alike.

District Eight has a strong naval presence. Here the Navy employs over 30,000 people including more than 15,000 active-duty sailors and Marines, and is steward to over 12,000 acres. Naval Base Kitsap oversees several military installations including Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, the home port of the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis. Submarine Base Bangor is home port of nine trident nuclear submarines and two Ohio-class guided missile submarines. Naval Magazine Indian Island provides ordnance and logistics support to the Pacific Fleet. Naval Undersea Warfare Center Keyport and the Naval Hospital Bremerton are part of the naval presence.

District Eight is also the home of the worlds largest floating bridge over saltwater, the Hood Canal Floating Bridge. Within the district are several hydroelectric dams, providing power to the surrounding community.
