Module #1-0rientation and Job Search Preparation

The most difficult part of any job search may be taking the first step. In this interactive workshop, you will gain an understanding of the changing workplace and learn about community resources that can help. You also will learn how to use job search information.

In many ways, the job search process is like preparing for a trip or journey. It involves establishing a travel agenda or plan, identifying the supplies and tools that may be needed, and using maps to establish a travel route. Successful job seekers understand the changing workplace, and know

what tools and resources they will need to reach their destination. participants in this workshop will identify their job search needs by taking the Job Search Readiness Inventory. They will explore how work has changed and how these changes affect the job search process. They will also use metaphors and mind maps to help them begin their individual job search.

Module #2-Knowing Yourself

Job seekers are continually faced with change and choices. Learning "who you are" can affect how you plan, control, and shape your life. Participate in this interactive workshop to gain new and exciting information about yourself!

One of the first steps in the job search is to be clear about who you are. In other words, what is it that you are marketing to an employer? Participants in this workshop will examine their interests, learning styles, personality types, and values. They will explore their decision-making styles and evaluate their ability to establish and commit to a goal. They will learn how to combine all of this information to design a more effective job search.

Module#3-Skills and Abilities Analysis

Skills and abilities are the building blocks of job success. Learn to identify, demonstrate and package with confidence the skills and personal qualities today's employers desire.

The new economy requires workers who can transfer skills from one work setting to another, and who have the kinds of personal qualities that make organizations successful. Successful job seekers must know how to identify these skills and qualities within themselves, and be able to describe and demonstrate them in ways that have meaning to employers. Participants in this workshop will learn how to identify and demonstrate a variety of skills and personal qualities desired by employers. They also will use computer software to identify their transferable skills and the kinds of occupations that require these skills. Participants who complete this workshop will be able to package their skills in a way that will communicate their desirability to employers.

Module #4- The Job Market

A successful job search is really finding an employer who is looking for someone like you. Learn how to research your labor market, develop networks, and conduct informational interviews.

Understanding one's labor market is an important element of any successful job search. Participants in this workshop will determine fields of work most likely to need their skills, and identify organizations that traditionally hire people with these skills. They will learn how to create an information network, how to plan and conduct an informational interview, and will have hands on practice with a variety of labor market resources, including computer software and Internet Web sites. Participants who complete this workshop will greatly increase their understanding of how the labor market works.

Module #5-Effective Job Search

The changing workplace requires everyone to think differently about what makes a successful job search. Learn the most and least effective strategies for finding employment, and conduct an actual job search on the Internet.

Many job seekers lack up-to-date information about effective work search strategies. Participants in this workshop will learn the most and least effective methods for obtaining work, and for contacting and connecting

with employers. They will learn how to design a job search schedule, build on their information network, and conduct a job search via the Internet. They also will learn oral communication skills, and practice delivering one-minute commercials-brief, high impact presentations to potential employers. Participants who successfully complete this workshop will be a step ahead of the average job seeker because they will have clear strategies for con- ducting a work search, and will know how best to present themselves to employers.

Module #6-Applications and Resumes

Successful job seekers know what employers want. Learn how to complete applications, develop resumes, and design cover letters that will attract employers and lead to more interviews.

An important part of any job search is to understand the employer's perspective. Participants in this workshop will learn how employers read applications and resumes, so they will be better prepared to meet an employer's expectations. They will learn how to organize and communicate in writing their skills and abilities in a way that stands above the aver- age job seeker. They will be able to produce a high-quality professional resume without paying an outside source, and will learn how to disseminate it electronically. They will leave the workshop with a master job application that can be applied in the "real world," and with a worksheet that will provide the framework for developing formal resumes. Participants will also have access to a PC and to appropriate software through the WorkSource resource room.

Module #7-lnterviewing

Being able to handle an employment interview is a necessity for any job seeker. Learn helpful interviewing tips, and practice your interviewing skills in a supportive, realistic environment.

Job seekers who look good "on paper," often have a difficult time with interviews. They communicate much better in writing than they do in person. Participants in this workshop will explore the nature and structure of employment interviews, will learn how employers approach the interview, and will practice responding to frequently asked-and sometimes difficult interview questions, e.g., "Think of an example when you. ..," and "What would you do if. ..?" Practicing interviewing skills in a supportive environment, and receiving helpful feedback will be major features of this workshop.
