Mission
The Washington Service Corps (WSC) builds and expands a statewide ethic of service by inviting individuals 17 and older from diverse backgrounds to contribute their time and talents to improve communities across Washington State. Creative partnerships with local government entities, faith- and community-based organizations and nonprofit agencies, play a critical role in the Washington Service Corps’ ability to support communities as they address their most pressing needs. The mission of the WSC is accomplished through service activities addressing five priority areas: education, the environment, emergency preparedness, public safety, and health/human needs. The Washington Service Corps began its partnership with federally funded National Service Programs in 1992. Operating as a state funded service program for 18 – 25 year olds since 1983, the WSC brought its expertise to the newly enacted federal National and Community Service Act. Launching a state-federal partnership for National Service the WSC established the first national service team in the United States since the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930’s. Now reaching across the state with sixteen teams, the WSC AmeriCorps partnership is a dynamic part of the AmeriCorps National Service Network. |
