Experience Rating/Benefit Charging


  • Reviews and responds to inquiries regarding tax rates, charges to employer accounts for benefits paid, and requests for relief of charges.
  • Reviews and processes experience rating and noncharging appeals.
  • Reviews quarterly benefit charge statements and annual tax rate calculations; releases statements and tax rate notifications for mailing.
  • Corrects and makes adjustments to experience rating tax calculations.
  • Determines whether an employer must pay the UI tax (taxable employer) or if the employer has the option to reimburse the department for the actual amount of benefits paid out to their employees (reimbursable employer). Updates tax computer records to reflect which type of payment the employer can/elects to pay.
  • Makes changes to employer classification codes to reflect the business’ type of organization (e.g., state government, non-profit, for-profit business) based on information provided by employers.
  • Calculates rates and mails billings to taxable local government employers.
  • Bills federal agencies and other states for amounts they owe Washington for their portion of benefits paid on claims that include federal employment wages and wages from more than one state (combined wage claims).
